| If anything is certain, it is that nothing is certain - especially when society has broken down. Anyone living in a territory infested with zombies will certainly lead a varied life. There will be times when you will need to quickly improvise a haven. It does not really need to be comfortable or spacious, it needs to be secure and easy to produce. It needs little or no fortification, limits access to a small area, and is out of sight. These temporary resorts should be considered just that: a resort, and a last one at that. BillBoards- Spoiler:
Advantages Billboards on large buildings are (if accessible, and practical) a great place to create a large rescue message or telling any survivors nearby where to go if you're scouting for people although it could put your shelter at risk of bandits and looters. Many billboards are on specially designed towers along highways, major roads, and on city limits. These towers are accessed by ladders that don't come all the way to the ground. With a crowbar hooked over the bottum rung (or other improvization) it may be possible to gain access to the catwalk above. The catwalk might temporarily shelter about ten people from zombie attack. The possibility of falling might be considered an advantage in light of suicide as an anti-reanimation measure. The heights could also offer a low-risk reconnaissance advantage, allowing one to survey an area before travelling there.
Disadvantages A billboard lacks nearly everything required for a permanent base. Billboards have no food or water sources and are exposed to the elements. If you get surrounded by bandits/zombies you will have no way to escape, except by deathly methods. Therefore a billboard should be low on the list of potential base sites. Fast Food Restaurant- Spoiler:
A fast food restaurant may make an adequate temporary base and is a low risk-low-reward refuge. Upon an outbreak occurring, a fast food restaurant is generally unthought of. Unless in an urban area, a fast food restaurant will have few zombies around.
The interior is not well suited to establish a defensive position, but the roof is something else entirely. The typical fast food restaurant (especially in America) has a spacious, flat roof with ladder-only access. They are built only to be climbable by ladder, so building a makeshift base is drastically simplified. Obviously, there may be food inside the restaurant, but whether or not it is safe to eat depends on the kind of food, and how long it has been without proper refrigeration. As with all bases, procuring and storing supplies before hunkering down is crucial to survival. Tree House- Spoiler:
A tree house can be quite useful in a zombie apocalypse for a loner if they have enough food and ammunition to survive. However, a tree house (depending on where you live and how many you have seen in your neighborhood) can be difficult to locate and can be very hard to enter if there is no way up the tree. If it is near your base it can be a useful sniper position however, depending on the size of the tree house, there will not be much room since most tree houses only have a single room.
Advantages It can be a good vantage point for a marksmen. Zombies can't climb up to the tree house. You would be able to see what is coming your way for a distance.
Disadvantages Unless you have a form of escape, you can be subjected to siege. Bandits can easily penetrate the tree house's lackluster defenses. Can take a while to build Usually not much room Usually not very high up, making escape (if surrounded) difficult Wood stays wet for a long time Usually doesn't have good insulation. Bomb Shelters- Spoiler:
A bomb shelter is any kind of structure built to protect people from effects of bombs. This is a good place to hide from zombie, but just make sure you have plenty of food and ammo and a way to check if there are zombies in your area. If there is already food, ammo and weapons stored in the bomb shelter ahead of time you won't have to worry much about running out of supplies for a while. Your bomb shelter has two ways out, so you will be able to have an escape route as long as there are no zombies outside the exit.
Advantages Some bomb shelters are hidden underground so zombies and bandits will pass by the bomb shelter without even noticing. Some shelters are quite large, so a medium-large sized party may use it as a base.
If you have something to entertain yourself while in the bomb shelter also if you have a generator for electricity you wont have worry about being bored.
Disadvantages Bomb shelters are somewhat rare nowadays. Some bomb shelters have hidden doors so bandits can enter as long as the door is unlocked.
